Riverstone Literary Journal is now closed for submissions to ISSUE 4: RESIST

What do you resist?

Resistance to… late stage capitalism… land theft… genocide… apartheid… colonisation… climate fucking… consumer culture… fast living… cis-heteronormative bullshit…

We currently have an open call for submissions responding to the theme of RESIST. We are accepting submissions of poetry, short fiction, creative non-fiction, and hybrid/experimental works. We are looking for works up to 2500 words. Shorter micro or flash style pieces are encouraged. Poetry submissions should include no more than 3 pieces.

This issue has been birthed into the world as a response to the genocide and ethnic cleansing occurring in Gaza to the Palestinian people by the Israeli war machine and the absolute negligent response from so called ‘world leaders’. Shameful. And the so-called Australian government directly benefits from perpetuating this violence through their own ongoing colonial project against First Nations mob. Shameful.

In this issue we particularly would like to platform Palestinian and First Nations and Indigenous voices.

We also encourage emerging writers, queer identifying writers, BIPOC writers, writers identifying with an underrepresented or diverse gender, and writers with a disability to submit their work.

We particularly welcome works that are experimental in form, merge and challenge genre boundaries, and explore emerging ways of writing.

Please send submissions to riverstonelit@gmail.com with your work preferably attached as a single Word document, PDF, or Google Doc using Times New Roman size 12 font and double spacing. In the body of the email please attach a short biographical statement (<50 words). Simultaneous submissions are welcome, however please notify us if your work gets accepted elsewhere so we can congratulate you! We will try our best to respond with a decision as timely as possible, but we are a small team and a wait time is to be expected. We will endeavour to respond to all submissions by 2 weeks after the submission window has closed.

Securing funding for this issue has been unsuccessful and Riverstone can no longer offer a contributor fee as we have been able to in previous issues. While this saddens us deeply, we have decided to go ahead with another issue, figuring putting forth another issue into the world without funding is better than no issue at all. We hope you understand, and will continue to strive for paid opportunities for artists in this capitalist hellscape.

Submissions close on Sunday 17th March 2024 at midnight.
